Bonnies Unable To Slow Down Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – The St. Bonaventure women’s soccer team (5-10-1, 2-4 Atlantic 10 Conference) was unable to keep the nation’s third-best offense off the scoreboard Friday night, as Dayton (11-4, 5-1 A-10) recorded three goals – including one from the nation’s leading scorer – to give the Flyers a 3-0 win over the Bonnies at Baujan Field.

Bonaventure fended off the vaunted Dayton offensive attack for the opening 30 minutes, but then the Flyers put their third-ranked offense on display.

At the 30:14 mark, Alexis Garcia headed home a corner inside the near post to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead. Not even a minute later, Colleen Williams – the country’s leader in points per game – added to her total by depositing her 14th goal of the season to extend the lead to 2-0 within a span of just 55 seconds.

All things considered, Bonaventure’s 2-0 halftime deficit could have been much worse as Dayton outshot the Bonnies, 16-4, in the opening 45 minutes, including a 9-2 shot-on-goal disparity. However, SBU keeper Katie Kerkman was able to make seven stops to keep the Brown and White in the contest.

Those seven rejections tied the senior’s career high for saves in a single game. The Wisconsin native’s previous high came during a 1-0 shutout of Bowling Green during her freshman season in 2009. She went on to make 11 total saves on the night, tied for the most made by a Bona keeper in a game this year.

Dayton added to its lead early in the second half when Ashley Campbell tallied her ninth goal of the campaign in the 56th minute off the third assist of the game from Juliana Libertin.

The Flyers ended the contest with 25 shots attempted and 14 on goal, both season highs surrendered by the Bonnies.

Freshman Abby Maiello attempted a team-high three shots for Bona, with sophomore Caitlin MacConnell firing two shots on net. Freshman Stephanie Jenkins (pictured) was one of four other SBU players to attempt a shot on UD keeper Jordin Melchert, who earned her fifth shutout of the year by making three saves.

St. Bonaventure will look to salvage its weekend roadtrip to the Buckeye State when it returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Xavier.

GAME NOTES: Dayton averages more than three goals per game (3.07) … Williams’ 14 goals match St. Bonaventure’s team total for the year … a player on each team received a yellow card (SBU: Alyssa Lapp) … Dayton’s aggressive attack resulted in the Flyers being whistled for offsides seven times … Libertin fired a shot off the crossbar in the 83rd minute … the Bonnies committed 12 fouls compared with five for UD.
