Boston University men defeat Holy Cross

September 24, 2009
BOSTON - Senior Richy Dorman tallied his first points of the season by first scoring a goal and then recording an assist on the second goal to lead the 19th-ranked Boston University men's soccer team past Holy Cross, 2-0, on Wednesday night at Nickerson Field. Senior Hrafn Davidsson just needed one save to earn his fifth shutout of the year, as the Terriers (5-2-1) outshot the Crusaders (1-5-0), 27-5.

Looking for an offensive spark, the Terriers had started the season scoring seven goals in the first three games but had only managed two in the last four. They quickly found their rhythm against the Crusaders, controlling possession for much of the game.

Sophomore Ben Berube was on the attack first, pushing the ball up the line to get in position for shot attempts at 11:05 and 12:10, respectively. He headed in an attempt off a cross at 13:42 that was saved by Thomas Booth. However, the America East player of the game Dorman was in position to head in the rebound for the first goal of the night.

Just minutes later at 16:05, Aaron O'Neal headed in a goal inside the box off a cross from Ade Akinsanya, who was set up to make the pass by Dorman from the middle of the field. With the score, O'Neal now has a team-leading fifth goal and 12 points, just four away from matching his personal best set as a freshman.

At the half, BU led Holy Cross in shots, 12-4, and in corners, 3-0. They came out the aggressors again in the second stanza and only allowed the Crusaders to attempt one shot to finish ahead, 27-5.

Ben Berube led the Terriers with seven attempts, while Kyle Miller had three for Holy Cross. Booth finished with five saves, as the Terriers edged Holy Cross in corners, 7-2.

The game marked the first one for the two in-state programs since 1973 and the seventh overall meeting. With the victory, the Terriers earned their sixth in the series and have outscored the Crusaders, 24-9.

Up next for BU is a visit to Rhode Island on Saturday (Sept. 26) for a 7 p.m. start time.
