BU women beat New Hampshire
October 9, 2009
BOSTON - Four different Terriers scored on Thursday night, as the Boston University women’s soccer team (8-4-2, 4-0-0 AE) defeated Vermont (1-8-3, 1-1-1 AE), 4-0, at Nickerson Field. The victory extended BU’s winning streak to six games and its offense has now tallied 15 goals during that span.
In all, seven different players figured into the scoring on Thursday night. Junior Shauna Kelleher opened the scoring just one minute in off a great individual effort as she weaved through a handful of defenders and slotted it into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
Freshman Megan McGoldrick upped the lead to two, 36 second into the second off a string of passes from sophomore Jessica Luscinski and senior Farrell McClernon, and senior Emily Pallotta made it a three-goal game in the 52nd minute after a scramble inside the box. With just over six minutes remaining in the contest, sophomore Tiya Gallegos rounded out the scoring with her first goal of the season with classmate Cynthia Warman picking up the assist.
Kelleher came out of the gates with a quick goal, maneuvering her way through UVM’s defense and unleashing a shot to the near right side. The goal gave BU the momentum in the early going as it dominated the flow of the game and outshot UVM, 5-0, through the first 15 minutes. In the 25th minute, McGoldrick rocketed a point-blank shot towards Vermont’s Eliza Bradley, however, the netminder was positioned perfectly for the save.
In a near replica of the first half, McGoldrick opened the scoring early in the second half. The play started on the near left side where Luscinski brought the ball down the field and crossed it into the 18-yard box. McClernon collected the feed and immediately dished it off to McGoldrick, who ripped a shot into the far right side. Pallotta upped the advantage to 3-0 in the 52nd minute when she picked up a loose ball inside the box after a scramble. It was Pallotta’s fourth of the season, which is a team high. Following the third goal, BU continued to maintain possession as it held a commanding 20-2 advantage in shots with under 10 minutes remaining in the game. Gallegos completed the scoring in the 84th minute when she one-timed it in off her left foot off a pass from Warman.
BU held the 23-2 advantage in shots and the 8-2 edge in corner kicks. McClernon now has 42 career points, which places her 10th all-time in program history for scoring, while Pallotta has moved up to 13th with 37 career points.
BU will hit the road this weekend as it travels to Albany on Sunday (Oct. 11) for a 2 p.m. kick-off.
