Cal Poly Defeats CSUB 2-1 In Double Overtime
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Sara Lancaster’s goal with 4:01 remaining in double overtime gave Cal Poly a 2-1 victory over CSU Bakersfield in women’s soccer action Friday night.
After a scoreless first half, Cal Poly (2-1) forward Cristina Farrington got the Mustangs on the board with redirection of a Cici Kobinski cross in the 52nd minute. Emily Noethe (Fr., Dallas, Ga., East Paulding HS) tied the match for the Roadrunners (0-2) when she headed in a Daisy Vazquez (R-Jr., Redwood City, Calif., Woodside HS) pass from the right side with 2:51 remaining in regulation. Both defenses held in the first overtime. Lancaster’s goal was set by a Afton Thulin shot which was saved by CSUB goalie Kym Gause (Sr., Manteca, Calif., Modesto JC) but the ball came out to Lancaster who put it away for the gamewinning goal.
“It is disappointing to fight and get back in it and then lose in double OT. It is the worst feeling there is,” CSUB Head Coach Melissa Phillips said. “The girls showed a lot of character. It’s the organization and the simple things where you can’t get caught chasing because a team like Cal Poly will put it away.”
The Roadrunner return to action Sept. 2 when CSUB hosts Southern Utah. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
