Canisius Blanks Detroit, 1-0

September 22, 2013

A penalty kick from senior Will Hudson and a shutout from classmate Ryan Arvin led the Canisius College men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory at host Detroit on Sunday. With the win, the Griffs improve to 3-3-1 on the season, while the Titans drop to 0-3-4.

“I’m really pleased with our performance today and I liked how we bounced back from such a poor game on Friday,” said Canisius head coach Dermot McGrane. “It wasn’t the prettiest game of soccer I’ve ever seen but it is nice to grind out this win.”

Both teams were held off the scoreboard until the 72nd minute when the Griffs’ appeals for a handball in the box were finally answered. After his first successful attempt was called back due a player entering the box early, Hudson fired the ball in a second time from the penalty spot for the game’s only goal.

The Canisius defense preserved the victory from there. Arvin finished the game with four saves in the win, posting his second shutout of the season and the third of his career.

The Griffs outshot the Titans, 13-8, with both teams attempting two corner kicks. Nathan Steinwascher recorded three saves in the defeat for the Titans.

Canisius wraps up non-conference play next Sunday with a road contest against St. Bonaventure. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. in Olean, N.Y.
