Charlotte releases men's 2012 schedule

The Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer team, who reached the College Cup Finals for the first time in school history last season, face a challenging schedule in 2012 featuring six 2011 NCAA Tournament teams. The 49ers are also hosting the Atlantic 10 Tournament, November 8-11.

"I am very excited to announce the schedule,” Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. “In keeping with the Charlotte tradition, we have scheduled a very challenging out of conference schedule, including six NCAA Tournament teams from last season."

Charlotte begins the season with four straight home games at Transamerica Field. First, the 49ers play Gardner-Webb in an exhibition match, August 18.

The 49ers kick off the regular-season when they play Denver at Transamerica Field, August 25. The 49ers next two games come against 2011 NCAA Tournament teams. First, Charlotte plays Coastal Carolina at home, Monday, August 27. Then, the 49ers play future league foe in Conference USA’s UAB, Friday, August 31. The Charlotte-UAB game is a rematch of a 2011 Second Round NCAA Tournament game which the 49ers won on the road, 3-1.

The 49ers hit the road for the first time when they travel to Lexington, Kentucky for the UK Invitational, September 7-9.  Charlotte plays 2011 NCAA Tournament participant Stony Brook and future Conference USA foe Kentucky in the Invitational.

Then, Charlotte returns home for the only time in the month in September when they play future Conference USA rival and 2011 NCAA Tournament participant South Carolina, September 12.

Charlotte closes out the non-conference portion of their schedule with three straight road games. Charlotte plays at in-state foe UNC Greensboro, September 15. They will then play 2011 NCAA Tournament participants Elon, Saturday, September 22 and UCF, Wednesday, September 26.

The 49ers kickoff Atlantic 10 play on the road in Richmond, Virginia with games against VCU, October 5 and Richmond, October 7.

Charlotte will then play four straight Atlantic 10 games at Transamerica Field. The 49ers host Fordham in their A-10 home opener, October 14. Charlotte concludes the A-10 home opening weekend against La Salle, October 14. The following weekend, the 49ers play Massachusetts (October 19) and Rhode Island (October 21) at Transamerica Field.

The 49ers conclude the month of October with their final two A-10 road games when they travel to Saint Louis (October 26) and Butler (October 28).Charlotte concludes the regular-season at Transamerica Field when they play George Washington, November 3.

The regular-season culminates with the eight-team Atlantic 10 Tournament which will be played at Charlotte’s Transamerica Field, November 8-11.

"Last year's squad celebrated the most successful season in the program's history,” Langan said. “We are confident of continuing this great tradition here at Charlotte. We will be striving to become A10 Champions in our last year in the conference."
