Colorado College Falls to Southwestern

October 4, 2013

When Colorado College scores the first goal of a game, it's usually a good sign for the Tigers. But not on this night.

CC saw its six-game winning streak and share of first place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference disappear with a 2-1 loss to Southwestern University on Friday under the lights at Washburn Field.

Despite a 23-9 advantage in total shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks, the Tigers saw a 1-0 lead turn into a one-goal deficit in a span of 11:05 early in the second half.

Senior forward Brandon Ogilvie gave CC its only lead 21:35 into the contest when his header off a cross from senior forward Sean Parham beat goalkeeper Daniel Poole at the left post.

The Tigers nearly scored just three minutes into the game, but Southwestern’s Zach Faulkner made a brilliant sliding stop at the goal line after freshman midfielder Caden MacKenzie drew Poole off his line and slid a pass across the crease to a wide-open Ogilvie.

The Pirates tied the game in the 55th minute when Faulkner knocked in the rebound of a shot by Michael Olivares that Colorado College goalkeeper Ian Horne tipped off the crossbar.

The goal was the first allowed by the Tigers in conference play this season, ending a scoreless streak of 254:45.

Southwestern struck for the deciding goal in the 66th minute when Steven Resnick chased down a long pass from Matthew Nickell and launched a shot from just outside the top of the box that found the upper left corner.

The Tigers nearly tied it with 5:34 remaining, but sophomore forward Max Grossenbacher’s header off an Ogilvie cross from the right side went inches wide of the left post.

Poole stopped three shots for Southwestern, which improved to 8-4-0 overall and 6-0-0 in the SCAC.

CC slipped to 6-3-2 overall and 5-1-0 in league play.

Colorado College returns to action on Sunday when it plays host to Trinity University at 2 p.m. MT.
