Creighton organizes offseason trip to Peru

Once every four years, the NCAA allows college soccer coaches to take their team on an offseason trip.

But what Creighton coach Bob Warming has planned for his men’s group this month may force the powers that be to limit the BlueJays to one trip every eight years.

That’s because the Creighton program will find itself in Lima, Peru from May 21 to June 1 as part of a unique opportunity that will allow the team to participate in an international tournament played at different venues in South America.

Creighton will be the only American team represented amongst Peruvian professional teams as well as the University of Lima and the University of Saint Martin, to name a few of the competitors.

“This is a very unusual experience in that we’re going to play against professional teams and in a facility that seats (more than 90,000),” Warming said. “Four years ago we were able to fly to Buffalo and drive across Canada so by comparison this is pretty special.”

The entire trip will be hosted by Regartes Lima Peru, an expansive club located along the scenic Pacific Ocean. Everything from the team’s meals, to its lodging and entertainment will be taken care of by the club.

In addition to the trip, the NCAA will give Creighton 10 days preceding the trip to train – which is like gold for any coach trying to get more practice time with their group.

“This will be great for our chemistry. Our players really enjoy each other, we spent Spring Break together in Florida, and this will lead to even greater tightness among everyone,” Warming said.

It has already been a highly successful offseason for the Blue Jays, as Warming was inducted into the Omaha Sports Hall of Fame in February, and the team has enjoyed a strong spring season with victories against Notre Dame and NCAA defending champion Maryland.

The Blue Jays have great returning talent and a team that’s sure to feed off what should be an unbelievable experience in Peru.
