September 25, 2011

DENVER - The University of Denver women's soccer team stretched its Sun Belt Conference regular season match winning streak to 16 on Sunday, shutting out Western Kentucky 2-0 at CIBER Field.

Sophomore forward Kristen Hamilton (Littleton, Colo.) put the Pioneers (8-2-0, 2-0-0 SBC) on the board in the 14th minute with a clinical finish after a pair of one-touch passes from senior defender Kari Storslett (Bakersfield, Calif.) and junior forward Katy Van Lieshout(Boulder, Colo.) got Hamilton behind the Hilltoppers (5-5-0, 0-2-0 SBC) backline and in for the goal. The goal was Hamilton's sixth of the season and the 13th of her career.

In the 44th minute, the Pioneers made it 2-0 on Jessy Battelli's (Golden, Colo.) first goal of the season, and third of the sophomore defender's career. Freshman defender Paige Diamond (Pleasanton, Calif.) started the DU scoring chance, taking a few touches down the right side of the pitch before serving a cross into the WKU defensive six yard box and onto the head of Battelli.

"It's a good weekend," DU head coach Jeff Hooker said. "We got two wins against opponents that made appearances in the conference tournament semifinals last season."

The Pioneers controlled possession for most of the match, limiting the Hilltoppers to just three shots.

Only six fouls were whistled (DU 4, WKU 2), and no cards were issued in the match.

19 players on each team saw action in the match.

Lara Campbell (Anchorage, Alaska) stole a few crosses out of the air in the match, but was not required to make a save in her third shutout of the season.

Denver will head to Louisiana next weekend to play Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday at 6 p.m. MT, before taking on Louisiana Monroe on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT.
