Bulter Named First-Team, Maurer And Oughton Named Second-Team

EL PASO, Texas –
East Carolina senior captains Caty Butler, Maddie Maurer and Hali Oughton were named to the Conference USA All-Academic Teams, according to an announcement from the league office Wednesday morning. Butler earned her second-straight academic honor, while Maurer and Oughton are first-time selections.

Butler, who was a second-team all-academic selection a year ago, is a three-time C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and C-USA Academic Medal winner who holds a 3.89 overall GPA in exercise sports science (sports studies). On the field she has started all 19 games scoring a pair of goals and recording three assists. Against Houston and Southern Miss, both road contests, she collected a season-high three points (goal, assist) and netted the game-winning goal against the Cougars just 43 seconds into the match. In the regular season finale at home against Marshall, she assisted on Chrissy Gratz’ game-winning goal in the overtime period to help the Pirates secure the fourth seed at the upcoming soccer championships.

Maurer is a three-time C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient that boasts a 3.71 cumulative GPA in elementary education. This season she has started all 19 games playing every minute in 17-of-19 matches (1,744 minutes) and has helped ECU’s defense record 10 shutouts (eight in league play), which ranks 23rd nationally. Against Tulsa, she headed out a potential game-winner in the box in the second overtime period to help preserve the Pirate shutout.

Oughton is also a three-time C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll member that sports a 3.76 GPA in communications (journalism). On the pitch she has started 59-straight games entering the 2012 C-USA Women’s Soccer Championships, dating back to Oct. 30, 2009. A first-team All C-USA selection as a senior, Oughton has also played a vital role in the Pirates 10 shutouts playing 1,744 minutes. Offensively, she has collected seven points scoring three goals and recording one assist with a career-best three points (goal, assist) against Davidson. She recorded her third career game-winning goal at Southern Miss on a penalty kick in the 12th minute of play.

All three Pirate honorees have been named to the ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll for six-straight semesters and are scheduled to graduate in May of 2013.
