Huskers Drop Third Straight Big Ten Game

October 5, 2011

Lincoln - The Nebraska soccer team dropped its third straight Big Ten Conference game on Sunday afternoon at the Nebraska Soccer Field by a score of 2-1 to the Michigan Wolverines. The Huskers have now fallen below .500 on the season at 5-6-1 and hold a 2-3-0 record in conference play after winning its first two Big Ten games of the season.

Junior Morgan Marlborough scored the Huskers' lone goal of the game midway through the second half for her 16th goal of the season on assists from Blair Slapper and Stacy Bartels. For the second straight game the Huskers outshot their opponent, but couldn't turn the extra offensive opportunities into a win. On Friday, NU outshot Michigan State 16-9 and then outshot the Wolverines 17-13 on Sunday afternoon.

Michigan opened the scoring at 14:50 when NU goalie Emma Stevens couldn't control the ball at the top of the box and Nkem Ezurike was able to put the ball into an open net for her sixth goal of the season. The two teams remained deadlocked for the rest of the half and the Wolverines headed into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.

Ezurike struck again just 20 seconds into the second half when the sophomore blasted a shot from 35 yards out that carried over Stevens head. With a 2-0 deficit, the Huskers stayed aggressive and finally broke through with Marlborough's goal. Slapper sent the ball into the box and then Bartels attempted a shot that was deflected by a Wolverine player to Marlborough, who scored her seventh goal during Big Ten play. The Huskers kept fighting and got off nine shots in the second half, but couldn't find the equalizer to send the game into overtime.
