Indiana Scores Conference Road Win at Northwestern

October 2, 2011

EVANSTON, Ill. – Indiana sophomore Lisa Nouanesengsy put home her fifth goal of the season in the 71st minute to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 win at Northwestern (1-11, 0-5 Big Ten) on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field. Senior goalkeeper Lindsay Campbell was phenomenal in goal for Indiana (6-6-1, 2-3 Big Ten), making six saves on her way to her 13th career shutout.

It is the Hoosiers first victory at Northwestern since the 1999 season, going 0-4-1 in that span.

“We didn’t play well in the first half today but I think that was more a case of getting Friday’s game (loss at Illinois) out of our system,” Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said. “In the second half we got back on track in doing what we are good at – attacking teams and playing solid defense and that allowed us to get the win.”

Nouanesengsy scored the game-winner after Monica Melink beat her defender on the right side and sent a low, hard cross into the six-yard box that Nouanesengsy ran onto and deposited into the net. The five goals this season are the second most on the team while Melink collected her second assist of the year.

Campbell made six saves in the game to earn the shutout, her second of the year and 13th of her career, moving into a tie for second place on the career shutout list at Indiana. It is also her 17th career win in goal.

“Lindsay Campbell came up huge on a couple of breakaways,” Lyon said. “She was definitely the player of the game for us today.”

Northwestern held an 8-1 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes but the Hoosiers evened that out in the second half (8-8) as they began to mount a more consistent attack. Both teams drew four corner kicks while Northwestern goalkeeper Sam Hatfield made three saves in her first start of the season.

The last win for the Hoosiers on the road in Big Ten play came on Oct. 24, 2010, a 3-2 overtime victory at Iowa.

Indiana will return home to play Penn State on Sunday, Oct. 9, with kickoff slated for 11:00 a.m. and the Indiana men’s team to follow at 1:30 p.m.
