Jacksonville women defeat Lipscomb
October 27, 2009
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Oct. 25, 2009 It took the Dolphins 219 minutes and 35 seconds to score their only goal of the weekend but it came at the most crucial moment as Jacksonville defeated Lipscomb, 1-0 (2ot), at the Ashley Sports Complex.
The Dolphins (8-6-4, 5-1-4 Atlantic Sun) outshot the Lady Bisons (4-14-0, 2-8-0) 30-3 but it was the 30th that would count when sophomore midfielder Jessica Hurtado settled a pass from freshman midfielder Emily Culbreth in the middle of the box and fired a shot that struck the underside of the crossbar for the game- winner.
"It takes a lot to play two, 110-minute games in a weekend," said head coach Brian Copham. "I'm very proud and impressed with the effort we showed to get the winning goal. They didn't give up and get themselves down and it's a great team win. We played against a very well coached, organized team that made it difficult for us. We'll use the win to build momentum for the conference tournament next weekend."
The first chance for the Dolphins came in the 3rd minute with freshman midfielder Rachel Vollero teed up a shot from 23 yards away when she found herself with nothing but space. The freshman's shot just sailed over the crossbar for a goal kick.
The Dolphins would find another opportunity in the 14th minute when Hurtado won an indirect free kick from 25 yards out. The sophomore curled a ball to the far post that was met by Vollero who headed the ball down to senior defender Regan Riley in front of the goal. Riley's shot was saved by freshman goalie Erin Zeiro in a diving effort to her right, one of her ten saves on the day.
JU would win a corner in the 22nd minute that Hurtado delivered into the box and the ball dropped around a number of defenders. Freshman forward Eva Leeper, from the ground, put her foot on the ball but her attempt was blocked.
In the 29th minute, Riley took a great 80-yard run down the right side into the box and delivered a dangerous low cross to freshman forward Lisa Hensley. The freshman got a touch on the ball but her off-balance effort went wide.
The Dolphins outshot the Bisons 12-2 in the first half but were unable to capitalize on the five shots put on goal.
In the second half, sophomore midfielder Liz Fink took a great through ball from Hensley in the 52nd minute and found space at the top right corner of the box. The sophomore ripped a shot to the top right corner but Zeiro came up with another nice save.
Three minutes into overtime, junior defender Devon Dowell fired a shot from 18 yards out that seemed destined for the top left corner. Zeiro made a diving save, forcing a corner.
On the ensuing corner, the Dolphins forced the ball into the net but the goal was disallowed on a foul in the box. One minute later, Lisa Hensley would take a shot that deflected off the post.
Then, in the final minute of the match, Dowell played a ball out wide to Culbreth who fed it into Hurdato. The sophomore's goal was her third of the year.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Rooney has now extended her shutout streak to 526 minutes.
Before the game, JU's three seniors, Riley, Krissy Toth and Britney Hernandez were honored and thanked for their careers with the Dolphins.
The Dolphins finish the season fourth in the A-Sun and will host No. 5 Mercer next Saturday at the Ashley Sports Complex.
