Jacksonville women draw with Stetson

October 14, 2009
DELAND, Fla. -  Oct. 11, 2009  The Jacksonville University women's soccer team fought through the elements for a 2-2(2ot) tie against Stetson at the Stetson Soccer Complex in Deland, Fla. Both the Dolphins and Hatters scored two early goals and played the last 86 minutes without a score as JU drew its second straight match.

Leading the Dolphins (6-6-2, 3-1-2 Atlantic Sun) was a pair of freshmen, both tallying goals in the game. Forward Eva Leeper opened the Dolphins' account with a quick goal in the fourth minute. The Hatters (7-6- 1, 3-2-1) would respond in the 12th minute on a goal from junior Courtney Jenista. JU would answer back again in the 16th minute with a score from forward Lisa Hensley. The last goal of the game would be scored in the 24th minute of the game with a score on a slow rolling ball from Gavilsky.

"We did some good things early on in the attack and I'm proud of the work rate we put forth going into our second stratight 110-minute game," said head coach Brian Copham. "We had contributions from a lot of different players and thats what it's going to take to be succesful in this conference. I'm happy with the effort that we put forward this entire weekend and we're going to have to get ready for the final stretch of the regular season"

The Dolphins struck first in the fourth minute when freshman forward Lisa Hensley took a great ball down the right side just outside of the box and played a tidy, low cross into the middle of the area to be finished across the goal by freshman forward Eva Leeper for her fifth goal of the season.

Several minutes later, Hensley found herself in on goal and dribbled around goalie Andrea Garavaglia. The freshman's touch was too heavy, however, and her shot, with little angle, found the outside of the net.

The Hatters would tie the game back up in the 12th minute on the foot of Courtney Jenista. In similar style to JU's goal, junior Tessa Gavilsky fed a ball down the left side of the box to Jenista and the sophomore finished in the lower right-hand side of the net.

The Dolphins, not letting the equalizing goal or the heavy rain dampen their spirits, answered with another goal in the 16th minute. Leeper, looking to return the favor to Hensley, made a great individual play, taking on two defenders by herself. The freshman found Hensley making a run between the two Hatters, beat Garavaglia and clanked the ball in off the inside of the right post for her second goal of the year.

Stetson tied the game for the second time in the 24th minute when junior Katie Bitetto's slow rolling shot made its way across the goalmouth, past the reach of a diving Alexa Rooney, hit the post and was tapped in by Gavilsky.

The pouring rain would yield lighting seven minutes later, leading to a 52 minute rain delay as storms rolled through the area. After the delay was over, there would be bright sunshine for the rest of the match.

In the remainder of the first half, the Dolphins saw a majority of the possession but could not convert.

The start of the second half saw open play from both sides with each goalkeeper being asked questions several times. Rooney was called upon in the 62nd minute when Gavilsky took a ball across the top of the box and fired a low shot that was kept out with a great diving save by the sophomore.

On the ensuing corner, Rooney kept another ball out and was injured in a collision during the play, spending several minutes on the ground. She would continue, however, and showed no fear several minutes later when she came out to block Bitetto's shot from 10 yards out to keep the knotted at 2-2.

With five minutes remaining, the Hatters kept the pressure on the Dolphins and almost went ahead when Alexis Hermosa fired a shot towards the goal and Arianne Heaton blocked the shot nicely. Rooney would make a spectacular leaping save several minutes later on a shot by Gavilsky to send the game to extra time.

In the fifth minute of extra time, sophomore Jessica Hurtado played a great ball to Hensley, putting the freshman in on goal but her shot was saved by Garavaglia.

The Dolphins won a corner kick in the last minute of the game but the final touch was lacking and whistle blew signaling the end of play.

The Hatters outshot the Dolphins, 18-15, with Rooney grabbing eight saves. Liz Fink again led the team in shots (5).

The Dolphins are back in action on Thursday night when they make the long trip north to Buies Creek, N.C. to take on Campbell. After its matchup with the Camels, JU will turn right back around to prepare for the next installment of the SunTrust River City Rumble, hosting cross-town rival UNF on Monday night.
