Jacksonville women play Campbell to draw

October 16, 2009
BUIES CREEK, N.C. -  Oct. 15, 2009  The Jacksonville University women's soccer team drew their third consecutive match, 0-0(2ot) on Thursday night at the Eaks Complex in Buies Creek, N.C.

The Dolphins (6-6-3, 3-1-3 Atlantic Sun) fought hard throughout a cold and rainy night against the Camels (9-6-1, 4-2-1) but couldn't find the final touch.

"It's a disapointing result considering how well we've been playing," said head coach Brian Copham. "The seven that played in the back were outstanding today, but we have to find a way to take advantage of dangerous oportunities. We weren't prepared today like we needed to be and it'll have to change for Monday's derby."

The first half opened with the Dolphins applying pressure on the Camels including three shots and two corner kicks but possession was fairly even. During the spell, junior defender Devon Dowell flashed a header just wide of the goal.

In the 18th minute, Campbell swung a corner into the box and sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Rooney played a great punch-out in traffic; Rooney was fouled after play.

The 20th minute saw redshirt-sophomore Liz Fink launch a 35-yard shot at the home goal. The ball was saved by goalkeeper Jamie Panfil but the sophomore bobbled the ball and had to fall back on it before a Dolphin could find it.

Campbell produced the game's first goal-scoring opportunity in the 27th minute when Ilene Fahle headed a ball that had eyes for the top right corner but Rooney produced a great jumping save to keep the score level. Several minutes later, Kirsty Meyer sent a floating header goal-bound from just outside the 18- yard box and the ball grazed to top of the bar.

With one minute remaining in the first half, freshman midfielder Emily Culbreth took a great shot that just went wide for the last chance of the half. Just as Culbreth took her shot, a light rain began and would remain in the air as the game continued.

The first chance of the second half went to the Dolphins when sophomore Jessica Hurtado missed just left on a shot through traffic from the top of the box.

Campbell would find a great chance in the 51st minute when a corner fell in the box and the hosts were able to take several shots. One ball made it through the defense but Rooney made a heads-up play as she ran out to play the ball.

After the first five minutes of the second half, JU began pressuring the Camels and dominating possession.

Junior Jelena Vrcelj almost found the goal on her first shot of the game. Freshman Lisa Hensley made a great individual run down the right side and finished it by setting up Vrcelj for a shot that just went over the bar. Freshman Eva Leeper would send a shot in on goal a few minutes later that was saved off the bar.

In the 80th minute, Hensley found herself alone at the top of the box but the freshman couldn't get enough on her shot heading for the bottom right-hand corner and Panfil made the save.

The rest of the half resulted in a lot of open play and the Dolphins heard the whistle blow to send them to their third straight overtime contest, an event that has seen the Dolphins go 2-1-2 this season and the Camels play to 1-1.

The Dolphins quickly won a free kick in the 93rd minute that was to be taken by Fink. Fink floated a ball into the area and it was collected by Panfil.

The Camels found a majority of the possession in the second half of overtime and narrowly missed the game winner when Marisa Muller just couldn't put her sliding shot on target in the 103rd minute.

It was a dramatic finish to the game in the last minute when Campbell won a corner, their ball was cleared out and Hensley and Vrcelj found themselves two-on- one going down the field. Vrcelj was whistled offside and the game ended.

The Dolphins needed to quickly adjust to the weather conditions as game time temperatures were 50 degrees colder than when JU played its last affair at Stetson.

The Dolphins will be heading back to the friendly confines of the Ashley Sports Complex to take on cross-town rival UNF this Monday. The two teams will be battling for the "Old Wooden Barrel" in the SunTrust River City Rumble at 7 p.m.
