Jambga Strikes Twice as SIUE Drops Buckeyes

September 28, 2016

COLUMBUS, Ohio September 28, 2016 – Devyn Jambga scored twice, including netting the game-winner in the 89th minute Wednesday as SIUE men's soccer defeated Ohio State 3-2 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

"To go on the road and get the win at Ohio State is great for the program and great for the guys," SIUE Head Coach Mario Sanchez said.

The win is the first on the road this year for the Cougars who improved to 2-4-2 overall. The Buckeyes dropped to 3-7-0 overall with the loss.

"More than anything for players, I hope they understand how you win games," Sanchez said. "It takes that full effort for 90 minute. It takes belief and it takes trust."

Jambga's game-winner came on a low hard shot to the far post from 15 yards away after a through ball from Keegan McHugh.

"Devyn was unbelievable tonight," Sanchez said. "His energy and his work-ethic were great."

It was the only goal of the second half. The Cougars and Buckeyes combined for four first-half scores.

OSU got on the board first, in the eighth minute. Danny Jensen made it 1-0 when he connected on a pass at the far post.

Jambga picked up his first tally just 10 minutes later. After a Mathias Ebbesen header in the midfield, Greg Solawa then pushed a through ball to Jambga who scored from 16 yards away to tie the score.

Both teams took advantage of corners to score again. Austin Bergstrom put OSU back on top in the 27th minute, finding the back of the net following the corner kick.

Gabe Christianson scored his first goal since the 2013 season when he got his head on a corner kick from Andrew Kendall-Moullin just seconds before the end of the first half to tie the score 2-2.

"That just comes down to desire and drive," Sanchez said of the Christianson's goal. "Gabe is a big leader on the team. It's great to see him get the goal."

In an evenly-matched contest, SIUE held a slight 11-10 advantage in shots. Both goalkeepers, Kyle Dal Santo for SIUE and Parker Siegfied for Ohio State made three saves.

SIUE returns home for the annual Homecoming game Saturday night at Korte Stadium. The Cougars will play host to Drake as Missouri Valley Conference play continues for both sides.

"We just have to continue to respond and move forward," Sanchez said.
