Centenary controlled the tempo for the entire first half, keeping Immaculata in its own zone while outshooting the Mighty Macs 7-0 in the first period. Freshman Laura Potter (Gilboa, N.Y./Gilboa-Conesville) opened the scoring for the Cyclones by making good on a penalty shot in the ninth minute. Potter carried the ball into the 18-yard box with intentions of firing a point blank shot on goal, but was taken down by the Immaculata defender, thus being rewarded the penalty shot.
Centenary continued to put pressure on the Mighty Macs for the remainder of the first half, nearly scoring on shots by seniors Brittany Overland (Andover, N.J./Newton) and Caitlin Veverka (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy). Overland’s shot was stopped by the diving Immaculata goalkeeper, Meghan McCurnin, while Veverka’s shot was hit the crossbar and just missed bouncing into the goal before it was cleared by IU.
The Cyclones added a goal with less than nine minutes remaining in the half when junior Sara Smith (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) connected on a pass to freshman Samantha Sysak (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy), who drove the ball into the goal for a 2-0 lead.
Immaculata showed more fight in the second half, tallying six shots, yet the Cyclones were the only team to record a goal in the stanza when senior Courtney Flanagan (Hackettstown, N.J./Pope John XXIII) received a pass from sophomore Kelly Jane Carvalho (Roselle, N.J./Roselle Catholic) and promptly blasted a shot from 20-yards out to give Centenary a 3-0 lead.
The Cyclones return to action on Thursday, Oct. 13, when they travel to Rosemont, Pa., to take on CSAC opponent Rosemont College at 4:00 p.m.
