Late Push Gives Tulsa a 3-2 Win Over UCF

October 15, 2016

A late push by Tulsa gave the Golden Hurricane men’s soccer team a 3-2 win over UCF on Saturday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.  TU moved to 7-4-2 on the season and 2-2 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Knights fell to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the league.

“It got really spread out and really open late in the game and both teams got good goals,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said.  “I didn’t think we connected well through midfield today, but in the end the guys just worked hard and created some good chances.  The guys stuck with it and got three good goals.”

With the score tied 1-1, three goals were scored in the final 10 minutes to finish off the contest in regulation.

Matthew Puig put the Golden Hurricane up 2-1 in the 81st minute as he drilled in a shot from seven yards out off a combination from Rollie Rocha and Kay Duit.  Javier Clavijo evened the score for the second time of the contest as he punched in a score from just a foot out off a pass from Matias Pyysalo, but then Rocha recorded the game-winner as he scored from 20 yards out off a pass from Alejandro Chavez.

Pyysalo struck first for the Knights at the 60:32 mark, but Lucas Bueno, who earned playing time in his first collegiate game tonight, got the equalizer at the 67:27 mark on a rebound attempt from Jacob Gooden.

Tulsa had a 17-8 lead in shots, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal, and an 11-5 lead in corner kicks.

Lesley Nchanji had a team-best four shots, while Munashe Raranje, Vincent Pedace, Gooden and Rocha all had two attempts.  Jake McGuire logged all 90 minutes in goal and had one save.

Tulsa will return to action on Tuesday, October 18 against crosstown rival Oral Roberts.  Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
