Long Island men beat Mount St. Mary's

Emmitsburg, Md. - In a game that saw two goals in the final 14 seconds to force overtime, Long Island University(m) freshman Elliot Kane (Tulsa, Okla.) scored in the 108th minute to cap off a 3-2 LIU victory over Mount St. Mary's on Friday night in Emmitsburg, Md.
The Blackbirds (5-5, 2-0 Northeast Conference) fell behind, 2-1, with 14 seconds in regulation but were saved by freshman Jakeem Johnson's (Upper Montclair, N.J.) tally with only three seconds on the clock to force extra time. The freshman took a carom off the goalkeeper to head in the tying goal.
The contest appeared to be headed for overtime in the closing seconds before the Mount took a brief 2-1 lead at the 89:46 mark. It only took 11 seconds for Johnson to edge the score at 2-2, guaranteeing the overtime period.
The first 10 minutes drew two quick goals, with the Blackbirds striking first. Sophomore Steve Jakubowski (West Deptford, N.J.) buried home a throw-in from classmate Rommel Forde (Barbados) at the 2:00 mark to give the Blackbirds an early advantage. LIU's lead would be short-lived when Ty Fenstermacher sent a shot past Long Island goalkeeper Adam Janssen (Toronto, Ontario) to even the score.
After the first two goals, the scoring seized as the goalkeepers took control. Janssen tallied nine a season-high nine saves in the game while the Mount's Chris Davis stopped six shots. The Mount edged LIU in shots on goal 11-9 and the Blackbirds held a 6-2 lead in corner kicks.
Johnson led Long Island with four shots and three on goal. Jakubowski sent in three shots, two of which came on net.
The Blackbirds continue NEC play Sunday at Monmouth in West Long Branch, N.J. The game is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
