ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The 18th-ranked Louisville women’s soccer team continued the best start in school history with a 2-0 win at Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, Louisville improved to 6-0 this season, which is two wins better than the previous best start of 4-0 in 2007. SLU dropped to 1-4-2 overall with Sunday’s loss.
Leading the way for the Cardinals’ offense on Sunday was the duo of senior Caitlin Rehder (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West HS) and freshman Christine Exeter (Pickering, Ont./Pickering HS), while sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Vancil (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North HS) anchored another stellar effort for the Louisville defense. Rehder and Exeter each scored goals, while Vancil finished with four saves for her second shutout this week and the fourth of the season.
After the two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half, Louisville broke through for the game-winner in the 63rd minute when Rehder took short cross from freshman Julie Casselman (Gatineau, Ont./Des Sources HS) and found the back of the net from seven yards away for a 1-0 advantage. The goal for Rehder was her third of the season, while the assist for Casselman was her first of the season.
Less than nine minutes later the Cardinals ended any hopes of a Saint Louis comeback when Exeter’s high, lofted shot from distance in the 71st minute got past Billikens’ goalkeeper Katie Walsh for the final 2-0 margin. The goal for Exeter was her fourth of the season, which is tied for the team lead with redshirt freshman Angelika Uremovich (Oakville, Ont./St. Ignatius of Loyola).
Overall, Louisville finished with a 12-9 advantage in shots, including a 5-4 edge in shots-on-goal. The Cardinals had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks, while the two teams were whistled for nine fouls each.
