Midwestern State unable to take care of chances, falls to #2 ACU

October 28, 2011
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State had plenty of chances against No. 2 Abilene Christian Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field. The Mustangs just didn''t convert them allowing ACU to escape with a 2-1 Lone Star Conference result to keep its unbeaten season alive at 16-0-1. "This was two really good teams playing a quality soccer match tonight," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "It just comes down to who converts their opportunities. That sounds cheesy but it''s true." Abilene Christian junior Krysta Grimm broke open a scoreless match with an unassisted tally just inside the 18-yard box in the 74th minute, and then the Wildcats tacked on a second goal on a Megan Turner header off of a nice crossing pass from the left wing from Ashley Craig. The goals nullified a great start by the Mustangs, who seemed to create chance after chance in the opening half. Freshman forward Payton Fookes had the ball crossed to her feet deep in the box in the 10th minute of the contest and failed to find the open net, then senior forward Kelsey Hill squarely headed Maddie Fraser serve off of a corner kick in the 23rd minute but hit the post. "Kelsey played outstanding and created a lot of chances," Trimble said. Hill remains tied for MSU''s all-time lead in career goals at 43 and career points at 105 with one regular season game remaining. Hill, who led all player with six shots, remained active taking a through ball from Heidi Avila but beaten by a half of a step by ACU goal keeper London Elliott as she attempted to chip the ball into goal in the 30th minute. Elliott notched another of her five saves when stopped Hill one-on-one off of a nice combo pass with Fookes in the 33rd minute as the teams went into the intermission knotted at 0-0. The Mustangs finally broke through in the 89th minute with freshman Callie Briseno first collegiate goal off of a corner serve from Fraser. Midwestern State (10-5-2, 8-4-1) has clinched the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament next weekend in Abilene. The Mustangs will play the winner of the No. 3 vs. No. 6 match in the semifinal round Friday at noon. The Mustangs close the regular season Sunday afternoon in a Senior Day showdown with Eastern New Mexico. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
