October 13, 2013

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee soccer team (5-5-3, 2-2-1 C-USA) dropped a 1-0 decision to Louisiana Tech (7-7-1, 2-3-0 C-USA) Sunday afternoon at Hayes Soccer Stadium for the Blue Raiders’ Think Pink contest.

Prior to the match, starters for both teams released pink balloons in honor of those individuals who have battled or are battling breast cancer. Names of family members from players of both clubs affected by the disease were read over the PA system before the balloon release.

In the opening period, MT dominated the offensive side of the field, recording five shots with two on goal, while LA Tech had two shots. The Blue Raiders also took three corner kicks in the first period, while the Lady Techsters had none.

Both teams went to the locker rooms tied at 0-0 at the intermission. However, the Lady Techsters picked up some momentum in the second period, firing off seven shots with three on goal.

In the 65th minute, Tech’s Annabel Prior had a solid look toward the top of the box, sending a shot that had MT goalkeeper Kelsey Brouwer diving to her left. Prior’s ball managed to hit the post and bounce back to teammate Rosie Lethbridge, giving Lethbridge an open goal inside the box. The goal marked her first of the season.

LA Tech attempted an insurance goal in the 73rd minute, but Brouwer collected the save. Tech went on to secure the 1-0 victory.

Middle Tennessee managed to outshoot the Lady Techsters 10-9 as both squads recorded three shots on goal. MT also claimed the corner kick contest 6-2.

Brouwer logged 90 minutes between the pipes, recording two saves. Her counterpart Caitlin Updyke, grabbed three saves on the day and improved to 5-7-0 on the season.

The Blue Raiders return to action Friday, Oct. 18, traveling to Old Dominion for a 6 p.m. C-USA match.
