Mustangs battle Texas Woman's to 0-0 draw
DENTON, Texas -- Midwestern State was a little sluggish out of the box Sunday afternoon at the TWU Soccer Field.
But the scrappy Mustangs didn't let nearly 220 minutes of soccer in a 24-hour period take from a solid second half performance to come away with a scoreless draw against Texas Woman's University.
"We started off slow and didn't play up to our potential in the first half," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "TWU came out and was very dangerous the first 15 minute of the first half. We played much better in the second half."
Senior goalkeeper Mallory Whitworth remained active coming off of her line to negate the speed of the Pioneer striker duo of Brittany Martin and Emily Davila.
"Mallory played well and was able to cut off numerous through balls before they could become dangerous," Trimble said. "The girls played very well thoughout the back line."
The Mustangs managed just a pair of shots on frame, but produced a pair of solid scoring opportunities.
Junior midfielder Katy Catney floated a free kick deep into the box and off of the crossbar in the 55th minute, but the Mustangs were unable to collect the carom.
Sophomore forward Payton Fookes worked into open space in the 92nd minute but her shot fluttered over the crossbar.
"The negative was we let a half of soccer get away from us today," Trimble said. "The positive was we had back-to-back overtime games and we were able to fight our way to a tie. We just have to find ways to score goals and be better on restarts."
The Mustangs (2-6-3, 2-2-3) clawed their way to a 1-0 win in 109 minutes Saturday at Texas A&M-Commerce and have now played to a draw in three of seven Lone Star Conference matches.
Midwestern State faces a pair of critical road challenges next weekend facing Eastern New Mexico on Friday before dueling against West Texas A&M on Sunday.
Texas Woman's moved to 5-3-2 on the season and 4-1-1 in league play.
