BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Garrett Walke scored a golden goal in the 106th minute as the 12th-ranked Old Dominion men’s soccer team defeated FAU, 2-1, in double overtime on Saturday night at the FAU Soccer Stadium.

With just four minutes remaining in the second overtime period, Walke lofted a shot from outside the box that went over the FAU goalkeeper and into the back corner of the net to give the Monarchs the thrilling victory. The goal was Walke’s first of his career.

ODU (6-1-1, 2-0-1 C-USA) grabbed the lead in the 23rd minute on a goal from junior midfielder Cole Stringer. Ivan Militar curled in a set piece from the left flank that found Stringer, who hammered in a shot at the back post. The goal was Stringer’s fourth of his career and first of the season. The assist was Militar’s 18th of his career, moving him into a tie for eighth all-time in ODU history.

The Monarchs carried the 1-0 lead into the half, controlling most of the play in the opening segment. ODU outshot FAU, 9-1, in the first half.

FAU (0-8-1, 0-3-0 C-USA), however, evened the match back at 1-1 less than in the minute into the second half as Elijah McDonald found the back of net in the 46th minute.

Following the Owls’ score, the Monarchs had the better of play for the remainder of the second half, but could not find the go-ahead goal. The best opportunity for the Monarchs came in the 72nd minute, when Michael Nelson headed a free kick off the crossbar.

The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 through the second half and first overtime period, until Walke’s winner in the 106th minute.

Overall, the Monarchs outshot FAU, 18-5, and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. In net, ODU goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen played the entire matched and recorded three saves.
