Northridge women beat Fullerton

October 20, 2009
FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge(w) women's soccer team (8-8, 4-2
BWC) defeated Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, at Titan Stadium Sunday night. Senior
Niki Connolly collected her third goal of the season and freshman Cynthia
Jacobo recorded her third-straight shutout in net for the Matadors.

In their fourth-straight Big West road match, the Matadors took their third-
straight shutout victory and in the process, set a new program record.
Northridge finished its league road schedule with an impressive 3-1 record,
earning nine crucial points towards a spot in the Big West Tournament.

The Matadors broke through for the match's only score in the 26th minute.
Following a cross from Desiree Cardenas, the Titan goalkeeper misplayed the
ball and it fell to Niki Connolly, who whirled and fired a shot into the open net.

For Connolly, who is in her first season with CSUN, the goal was her third of the
season and her first of the year against a league opponent. For her career, in
which she spent the first three years at UNLV, Connolly now has 12 goals and
eight assists.

In net, Jacobo did not have to make a save to post her third-straight shutout, all
coming against league opponents. She now has a 1.000 save percentage, a 0.00
goals-against-average and has not allowed a goal in her 270 minutes in net
this season.

"We fought hard tonight to earn the win against a very good team," head coach
Keith West said. "The girls are playing with a lot of confidence right now and not
settling for anything but their best performances. I am proud of the way we
worked to get this win."

The Titans out-shot the Matadors, 15-6, in the game but failed to put a shot on
target. The Titans also won three corner kicks to CSUN's two. Shannon Simpson
finished with one save and allowed the goal in net for Cal State Fullerton, taking
the loss.

For the Matadors, the win in Orange County was the first in program history and
the first time that Northridge has posted back-to-back victories against Cal
State Fullerton. CSUN defeated Fullerton, 3-0, in 2008 at Matador Soccer Field.

The Matadors close out the 2009 regular season with three matches at Matador
Soccer Field. On Friday, Northridge hosts Cal State Bakersfield for a non-
conference match at 3 p.m.
