UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The second-seeded Ohio State men’s soccer team battled No. 7-seed Wisconsin to a scoreless draw in the Big Ten quarterfinal Thursday afternoon at Jeffrey Field, but the Badgers came away with a 5-4 penalty kick advantage to advance to the semifinal round. Wisconsin and Michigan will take the field in the first semifinal match beginning at 1 p.m. Friday.

 

Ohio State hit its first three penalty kicks, but missed the fourth attempt, putting Wisconsin in a position to capitalize. The Badgers converted on all five attempts.

 

“There is no question that we had plenty of opportunities to win today,” head coach John Bluem said. “But we just didn’t have what it took to score against one of the hottest teams in the Big Ten right now. We wish Wisconsin the best of luck tomorrow and will move forward to preparing for the NCAA Tournament.”

 

The Buckeyes’ record moves to 10-5-3 on the season, while the Badgers are 4-12-3, but undefeated in four of their last five games. With the draw, sophomore goalkeeper Matt Lampson earned his 10th shutout of the season and 19th of his career to move into third-place all-time on both the single-season and career charts.

 

The Scarlet and Gray had a commanding 30-5 shot advantage on the day, including 9-0 through the two overtime periods. Three Buckeyes – Matt Gold, Chris Hegngi and Sam Scales – posted six shots apiece, with Gold tallying two in the first overtime that were narrowly saved by Badger goalkeeper Max Jentsch.

 

Jentsch finished the match with an 11 saves, while Lampson was only forced to make one.

 

The Big Ten Tournament banquet will take place Thursday evening with major award winners and All-Big Ten squads announced. The Buckeyes then will await their NCAA Tournament fate, which will be announced at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15 on ESPNU.
