Old Dominion men beat North Carolina

NORFOLK, VA—Old Dominion University freshman Gideon Asante (Sunyani, Ghana) scored two goals to lift the Monarchs  (5-2-1) to a 2-1 victory over second ranked North Carolina (5-2) Tuesday evening.
 
The Tar Heels took the lead on Enzo Martinez goal off an assist from Josh Rice at the 24:11 mark if the first half.  With 46 seconds left in the half Asante gathered a deflection from sophomore Yannick Smith (Hillsborough, NJ. ) and knocked it in for the equalizer and a 1-1 halftime score.
 
In the second half Asante got a pass from sophomore Shane Howard on a break and beat the UNC keeper for the goal and a Monarch win.
 
Senior goalkeeper Evan Newton (Virginia Beach, VA.), the CAA Player of the Week came up with seven saves for ODU, which makes him the School’s all-time saves leader with 209, best Joe Mallia’s (ODU ’90) 207. Newton leads the CAA with a 0.56 goals against average.  Alex De John also made a crucial save on defense for the Monarchs late in the second half.
 
UNC outshot the Monarchs, 17-12 overall, and 9-8 in shots on goal. Asante led ODu with five Shots on goal, while Enzo Martinez had three.
 
Beating highly ranked teams is no stranger to the Monarchs. On Sept. 20 of 2003, ODU defeated No. 5 Wake Forest at ODU. In 2005, ODU defeated fourth ranked Virginia, 2-0 at, ODU defeated No. 1 Virginia in Charlottesville, 1-0 in 1985.  The Monarchs return to CAA play Saturday night at Delaware. Game time is 7 p.m. in Newark, DE.
