Patriots lose overtime decision to GWU 2-1
ORANGEBURG, SC - Braddick Price scored on a rebound goal with 2:13 remaining in the second overtime period to give Gardner-Webb University a hard-fought 2-1 win over Francis Marion University, Sunday afternoon (Sept. 1) in the final match of the Sleep Inn Women's Soccer Classic at South Carolina State University.
The Patriots drop to 0-3-0 with two of the defeats coming by a single goal. FMU will travel to Campbell University on Saturday for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
Gardner-Webb (1-2-1) outshot the Patriots 10-8, but Francis Marion held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
FMU sophomore goalkeeper Taylor O'Berry made four saves, while the Runnin' Bulldogs keeper Amy Schmitt had two stops.
Shelby Hooe gave GWU an early 1-0 lead when she scored off an assist from Meagan Reynolds in the fifth minute.
Francis Marion answered back at the 12:31 mark when junior forward Elizabeth Asare scored her first goal of 2013 and the 10th of her career. Juniors Chanel Harris and Kristina Marra were credited with assists on the score.
The match remained deadlocked for the remaining 77 minutes of regulation and through the first overtime session.
FMU did not register a shot in overtime, but did earn a corner kick only 2:47 prior to Price's winning score.
Harris and sophomore defender Kristin Leung led the Patriots with two shots apiece.
