PHILADELPHIA – The events leading up to kickoff between Penn and Stony Brook certainly could have led to both teams being sluggish out of the gate. With three different start times over two days as the two sides waited out heavy rains in Philadelphia, finally getting things going on Saturday was a relief to the Quakers and Seawolves. The relief was short-lived, however, for Stony Brook as Penn exploded for three goals in the first 18 minutes of play to surge its way to a 3-0 win.

Six different players had points for Penn (4-2-1) during the scoring spurt, with the trio of markers coming in a span of 8:41. Christian Barreiro opened the scoring in the 9^th minute when he took a Nicky Yin pass on the left side and went back across the box and off the right post for his third goal of the year.

Just over five minutes later, Penn’s two strikers got together for a nifty sequence, with Duke Lacroix taking Stephen Baker’s short pass at the edge of the box and then sliding a soft touch under a diving Stefan Manz for his third goal of the season.

Jake Levin added Penn’s third goal in the 18^th minute, one-touching a shot after Nick Unger lobbed in a ball as the Quakers regrouped after a corner opportunity was flushed out by Stony Brook. The Seawolves attempted to clear, but the ball found the leg of Unger who lobbed it over his head right to Levin who wasted no time and shot the ball before the Stony Brook defense could recover.

From there, Penn was able to stave off any thoughts of a Stony Brook comeback as Max Kurtzman made all four saves he was required to for his second shutout of the season. The Seawolves took just eight shots in the match, doubled up by Penn’s 16. Eight different players had shots for the Quakers, led by Barreiro’s five. Agyeman Botchway had three shots – two on goal – off the bench for Penn.

The Red and Blue return to action on Sunday against Long Island at 6 p.m. The Blackbirds were victorious on Saturday in the other match of the Penn Soccer Classic’s first day, defeating Temple, 4-1. The Owls and Seawolves will also play on Sunday, kicking off at 8 p.m.
