PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 12, 2012) – Led by two goals and an assist from forward Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, ON, Canada), the Rutgers women’s soccer team downed Louisville, 3-0, Friday night at Yurcak Field.

"There was a lot of energy and intensity out there tonight," said head coach Glenn Crooks. "The last three matches, from start to finish, have been what Rutgers soccer is all about. We have played very well on both sides of the ball through these last three games."

The three goals by the Scarlet Knights (10-6-1, 3-5-1) tied their highest mark of the season, and mark the most goals the squad has scored in a BIG EAST game since a 4-1 victory against Providence on Oct. 3 2010.

RU maintained possession for much of the contest, recording 18 shots and holding UofL to just seven. Filigno capped RU’s scoring onslaught with a goal less than a minute into the second half, as the forward slipped past a Cardinal defender along the right side for an open shot opportunity.

Filigno gave RU a 2-0 edge in the 26th minute on a breakaway score. Filigno slipped by the Cardinal defense and sprinted down the field, notching the goal off her own rebound in front of the net.

The Scarlet Knights struck first in the contest, as Amy Pietrangelo (Laval, Quebec, Canada) scored her first goal of the season. Filigno ran up the right side of the field, dishing off to a streaking Pietrangelo up the middle. The sophomore buried the goal from eight yards out to give RU an early 1-0 lead.

Defensively, RU shut down the Cardinals. Louisville recorded just seven shots in the match, while senior goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins (Concord, N.C.) made four saves to improve her record to 5-4-1.

At halftime, head coach Glenn Crooks honored former All-American and two-time gold medalist Carli Lloyd at midfield. Lloyd thanked the Rutgers fans in attendance and received a framed photo.

Rutgers hosts Cincinnati on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. The match will serve as Senior Day for Tricia DiPaolo (Sparta, N.J.), Maura McLaughlin (Robbinsville, N.J.), April Price (Mechanicsville, Va.), Simpkins and  Shannon Woeller (Vancouver, Canada).
