Saint Louis men lose to Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Saint Louis midfielder Devon Newport opened the scoring with a goal in the 14th minute, but No. 21 Charlotte scored three unanswered tallies to record a 3-1 Atlantic 10 Conference men’s soccer victory Friday night at Transamerica Field.
The Billikens, who were playing in their final game of a six-match road swing, move to 4-6-2 overall and 2-3-0 in A-10 play. SLU returns to Robert R. Hermann Stadium Tuesday when it hosts UMKC in a 7 p.m. kick, the first of five home games to end the regular season. Charlotte improves to 10-4-0 and remains unbeaten in the league with a 5-0 record.
Newport registered his second goal in as many games. At 13:10, he collected a loose ball after a corner kick and put a shot past Charlotte keeper Gavin Dawson to give the Billikens a 1-0 advantage.
Charlotte equalized at 23:31 when Tyler Gibson scored off SLU keeper Mark Pais. The 49ers put two more goals on the board in the second half, including the game winner by Charles Rodriguez in the 73rd minute.
Saint Louis has four more conference games remaining on the schedule, all at home. Following the UMKC game, the Billikens host Temple Friday, Oct. 29, and Saint Joseph’s Sunday, Oct. 31. In the final regular-season weekend, SLU welcomes A-10 foes Rhode Island (Friday, Nov. 5) and Massachusetts (Sunday, Nov. 7).
