Samp Puts Her Stamp on Hoosiers 1-0 Win Against Xavier

September 9, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the third consecutive game, senior Carly Samp found the back of the goal for Indiana (4-2-1) and this time she did it when her team needed it the most. Samp deposited her fourth goal of the season into the back of the net in the 85th minute to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 win over the Xavier Musketeers (3-3) on Friday night at Armstrong Stadium.

Samp’s outstanding senior campaign not leaves her with 47 career points (6th in IU history), 18 career goals (T5th) and seven career game-winning markers (T5th).

“I think this has to go down as a big win for us because Xavier is very difficult to score against,” Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said.  “We had a lot of chances but they are very well organized and have great goalkeeping so this is a significant win along the way for us.”

Indiana held a distinct advantage in nearly every statistical category in the game and help possession for a vast majority of the match. The final shot totals show 20 for the Hoosiers and just two for Xavier, while shots on goal were 13-1 in favor of Indiana.

To support the relentless attack by IU, they were credited with 14 corner kicks on the evening while Xavier managed just one. XU goalkeeper Katie Markesberry made 10 saves in the contest and the Xavier defenders also made a pair of saves to preserve the shutout in the first half and early in the second half.

But Indiana continued to put pressure on the Musketeers goal and were finally able to break through with time starting to run out. Sophomore midfielder Lisa Nouanesengsy gathered a loose ball on the left side of the box and dropped a pass off to Samp at the top of the 18-yard box. She took a touch to the right and then fired a rocket that squeezed inside the left post for the goal.

Lindsay Campbell made one save in goal for the Hoosiers in the first half before Shannon Flower came on in goal to start the second half. While she did not have to record a save, she did come out off the line to make a pair of plays to thwart XU counter attacks.

Xavier was lead by head coach Woody Sherwood, who is in his second year as head coach after serving as an assistant coach at Indiana under Mick Lyon.

The Hoosiers return to Armstrong Stadium to host No. 12 Marquette on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the final non-conference match of the season. Fans will be able to watch free, streaming video of the match at IUHoosiers.com or follow on Twitter (@IUWSoccer) for in-game updates.
