#Seawolves beat New Hampshire 1-0

October 4, 2014

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Sophomore Favio Sbarra (Caracas, Venezuela) scored an 85th minute goal to give the #Seawolves a conference opening 1-0 victory over New Hampshire on a wet and soggy Sunday afternoon at LaValle Stadium.

Anatol Reaction

"I'm very pleased with the result to open conference," said Anatol. "The guys stuck to the plan and in the second half we felt like a goal was coming. Favio scored a good goal to get us the result so I am pleased."

Goal Recap

Sbarra broke the scoreless draw late when he headed home a cross from redshirt freshman Fernando Wadskier (Caracas, Venezuela). Freshman Danny Espinoza (East Meadow, N.Y.) started the play by chasing down a loose ball to maintain possession and feed Wadskier.

Highlights

  • The #Seawolves didn't create many chances in the first half but found success in the second by whippping in crosses behind the Wildcat back four. The first good opportunity came off the foot of junior Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.). His cross was deflected by a New Hampshire defender but it went wide.
  • Moments later, Wadskier headed a cross from Giordano but it was saved by the goalkeeper.
  • Giordano fed Wadskier with another great pass ensuing the Seawolves goal but his breakaway attempt was stopped.

Notes

  • New Hampshire outshot Stony Brook 10-8, thanks in large part to holding the Seawolves to one shot in the first 45 minutes.
  • Stony Brook responded from the slow first half to outshoot the Wildcats 7-5 in the second stanza.
  • Wadskier led Stony Brook with three shots and two shots on goal.
  • Redshirt freshman Tom McMahon (Nassau Bay, Texas) earned his second career clean sheet with two saves.
