Tulsa Team Defeats Missouri State, 2-0
The Tulsa women’s soccer team defeated Missouri Southern, 3-1, on Sunday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 2-0 overall, while MSSU fell to 0-1 on the season.
“I think we are still trying to find our way a little bit,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We accomplished what we wanted to today with getting a win, but also getting a lot of players playing time. I thought the first goal was good. Rachel played a really good ball into Caitlin, and what a way to celebrate your 21st birthday with the first goal of the game. Rachel’s goal showed how much skill she has. The cross was spot on and Rachel made a great run into the box. And Madison did a good job of getting in the box, drew the penalty and scored on the PK. It was a successful day, but we are just in week one so there is a lot to still work on.”
Caitlin Jancuska put the Golden Hurricane on the board as she headed in a cross taken by Rachel Thun at the 29:20 mark and TU took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Thun one-timed the ball into the back of the net as Roman Edwards cross the ball into the box at the 65:23 mark, and three minutes later Madison Smith capitalized on a penalty kick to put Tulsa up 3-0.
MSSU’s Karley Thomas tallied a goal from three yards out on a combination from Kayla Gajewski and Kimmy Hulse at the 82:20 mark.
Tulsa had a 25-3 lead in shots, including a 13-1 advantage in shots on goal, and a 13-2 lead in corner kicks.
Thun and Smith each had five shots, including three on goal, while Kajal Parmar added three attempts, and Jancuska and Lana Bermel each had two shots. Rebecca Defer logged all 90 minutes in goal, had no saves and allowed one goal.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, August 28 against SIUE. Game time is set for 5:30 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
