Tulsa Tops Temple, 2-1

October 2, 2016

The Tulsa women’s soccer team earned a 2-1 win over Temple on Sunday afternoon at the Temple Sports Complex in Philadelphia, Pa.  The Golden Hurricane moved to 5-6-1 on the season and 1-1 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Owls fell to 3-9 overall and 0-2 in the league.

“I didn’t think we came out with a sense of urgency,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said.  “We played okay in the first half, but weren’t creating enough scoring opportunities.  In the second half we came out with a sense of urgency because we were down 1-0.  Temple made some adjustments that made it difficult for us to play in the second half, but I felt like it also let us get forward more.  We handled ourselves very well in the second half.  I’m proud of our effort, but the thing I take away from today is that we have to find a way to start the game with urgency moving forward.”

Molly Tobin gave Temple a 1-0 lead heading into the break as she punched in a goal from six yards out in the 41st minute.  Darienne Chapman evened the score with just 66 seconds ticked off the clock in the second frame off a rebound attempt by Anna Williams.  Rachel Thun then put Tulsa up 2-1 in the 65th minute as she headed in a cross taken by Williams.

Tulsa had a 16-14 lead in shots, including a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal, and a 5-3 lead in corner kicks.

Thun had a team-best five shots, three of which were on goal, while Tana Dake and Williams both had two shots.  Courtney McKeon and Rebecca Defer each played 45 minutes in goal and combined for four saves.

Tulsa will return to action on Thursday, October 6 against Cincinnati.  Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
