STORRS, Conn. – University of Connecticut sophomore midfielder Kwame Awuah (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore forward Cyle Larin (Brampton, Ontario) each notched a goal to push the UConn men’s soccer team past conference foe Tulsa, 2-0, Saturday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. The win, which came in front of a crowd of 4,315, moves the Huskies to 4-5-2 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play, while the Golden Hurricane drop to 6-5-1 on the year and 2-2-0 in the American Athletic Conference.

 

Awuah put UConn on the board in the 38th minute, beating Tulsa goalkeeper Brandon Hanat on a beautiful strike from well outside the box after he received a pass from junior forward Nicholas Zuniga (Norwalk, Conn.). Larin, who leads the Huskies with 12 points on five goals and two assists this season, secured the win for Connecticut in the 82nd minute, as he found some space in the box and fired a shot that deflected off the back of a Tulsa defender and into the goal.

 

Awuah’s goal, his first of the season, was a moment of redemption for the UConn midfielder. Earlier in the half, a defensive miscue left him with the ball in the box and an empty net, but his shot on clanged off the left post and out of play.

 

“I think my goal was really just the result of my determination to score after missing that one earlier,” Awuah said. “We really needed this one and it was nice to get the win.”

 

The Connecticut defense continued to impress on Saturday, holding its opponent to just five shots in a match for the second straight game. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Scott Levene (Stamford, Conn.), who has tallied a shutout in each of first three career starts, played all 90 minutes again for a Husky team that has conceded just one goal in the last 433 minutes. The Golden Hurricane managed to put just three shots on goal in the loss, as Tulsa fell to 0-2-1 all-time against UConn.

 

The Huskies return to the pitch on Tuesday when they face No. 4 Syracuse at Morrone Stadium at 7 p.m. UConn is 22-11-3 against the former Big East rival in a series that dates back to 1982.
