UCSD Men Fall 2-0 to No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona

September 28, 2014

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men’s soccer team ran into a confident and in-form Cal Poly Pomona side Sunday in a 2-0 defeat in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action at Triton Soccer Stadium.

UCSD dropped to 6-3 on the year overall and an even 1-1 in the CCAA. Cal Poly Pomona, ranked No. 22 nationally, remained unbeaten at 7-0-1 overall and a perfect 2-0 in league play. The Broncos have conceded just one goal in their eight matches, that from the penalty spot in a 2-1 home win over Cal State San Bernardino Friday.

The result snapped a pair of lengthy streaks. UCSD had not allowed more than one goal in 33 straight contests dating back to a 3-0 loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Oct. 14, 2012. The Tritons had also shut out the Broncos over 475:31 at the start of the day, with five successive 1-0 triumphs since 2011. That run was extended to just over 533 minutes of play when CPP finally broke Sunday’s scoreless deadlock.

CPP’s goals came within a span of 2:53 in the second half. Adi Azran’s first of 2014 was an incredible strike at 57:33 from 25-30 yards out, looking at the goal straight on. His right-footed blast found the upper right corner, with assists going to Eshel Chardon and Daniel Asor.

At 60:26, Daniel Garcia, Jr., crossed in from the right, and Christian Gonzalez Diaz only had to tap in from the center of the penalty area at close range for his team-best sixth. Asor also picked up an assist on the play. All three Broncos came off the bench.

Cameron McElfresh had one save in net for UCSD. Fernando Pablo Quevedo, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week, wound up with three stops to notch his seventh clean sheet already of 2014.

Alessandro Canale, who captained UCSD on Sunday, took the first shot by either side in the 21st minute of what was not surprisingly a defensive duel for the majority. The striker latched onto a left-sided pass from senior teammate Brandon Bauman at the near post and provided a deft right-footed flick that was parried by Pablo Quevedo. The ball came out toward Matthew McClure, who put his effort well high.

Canale later had arguably the best opportunity for a Triton to score, in the 32nd minute. Quality combination play down the left side by Zachary Lagotta (San Diego/Cathedral Catholic HS) and Sam Palano put Canale in around the penalty spot, but his attempt with the inside of his right foot went narrowly wide to the left.

Shots were even on the day at 9-9, with Canale leading all players with five.

UCSD remains in home activity, awaiting Cal State San Bernardino this Friday, Oct. 3. Kickoff at Triton Soccer Stadium is set for 4:30 p.m., with the women’s game following at 7 p.m.
