September 2, 2009
WILMINGTON, N.C. - Sophomore Shawn Guderian scored twice in the second half as UNC Wilmington opened its season with a 3-1 win over rival Campbell in men's soccer action on Tuesday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
UNCW halted a four-game losing streak to their long-time rival with the win.
The Seahawks took the early lead on junior Brian Harrison's first career goal in the 16th minute off a corner kick by sophomore Shaun Utterson. Utterson's sent his cross into the box where Harrison was able to send his volley past a diving CU goalkeeper Ted Awana at the 15:41 mark.
The Camels, however, drew even eight minutes later when Mitchell Cardenas redirected a short cross from Vince Trepasso into the back of the goal at 23:23. Trepasso beat a UNCW off-side trap and broke into the penalty area where he found a streaking Cardenas in front of an open goal.
Guderian, who came off the bench late in the first half, broke the 1-all deadlock by finishing a quick two-touch passing combination by junior Nassim Berhouni and freshman Etienne Boulanger in the penalty area less than four minutes into the second half.
UNCW's final goal came in the 67th minute when sophomore Christian Davidson sent a cross from the leftside and Guderian volleyed it home for a 3-1 lead.
The Seahawks built a 19-6 advantage in shots, but Awana recorded eight saves for the Camels, including six in the second half.
Sophomore Brandon Miller made three saves for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks visit the Sunshine State this weekend beginning with a match at Florida Atlantic on Sept. 4. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
