Utah Valley falls to Wyoming
September 5, 2009
OREM, Utah -- A late goal sent Wyoming to a 2-1 win over Utah Valley on Friday afternoon at Clyde Field. Athena Maher scored the lone goal for the Wolverines (0-4-0), who remained winless on the year.
"We did play a more complete game today but we created our own downfall," said UVU head coach Brent Anderson. "There are some things we've got to clean up. But overall I think we played a much better game today. If we can continue to play with that type of effort I think we'll have some positive results."
Emily Layton scored the game-winner in the 86th minute, with less than five minutes left, to move the Cowgirls to 3-1-0. Off of a header right in front of the Wolverine goal, Layton emerged from a cluster of players to knock the ball in before going down hard. Layton was forced to leave the game with blood on her head but not before scoring the winning goal.
The Wolverines had an 18-14 edge in shots including 9-6 on goal, but it was Wyoming that took an early lead, just 1:13 into the game, when Emma Wilson scored on a direct kick that inched just over the fingertips of Wolverine keeper Hailey Brown.
The scored remained 1-0 Cowgirls throughout the rest of the half with Wyoming keeper Courtney Merkle collecting seven first-half saves.
The Wolverines tied it in the 69th minute when Camille Broderick floated a pass into the left corner for Athena Maher, who punched it in from right in front of the goal. Broderick has assisted both UVU goals this season.
Utah Valley will now travel to El Paso, Texas to face UTEP on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. MT.
