Wagner Women's Soccer Blanked At Stony Brook

Stony Brook, NY – The Wagner College women's soccer team fell to the Stony Brook University Seawolves, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at LaValle Stadium.
 
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-5 on the season while Stony Brook improves to 3-4.
 
Chelsie DePonte broke a scoreless tie in the 23rd minute, putting the ball on the opposite side of the net after receiving a feed from Fanny Gotesson, to give the home team an early 1-0 advantage in what would prove to be the lone goal of the opening half. 
 
The first half was controlled by Stony Brook as Wagner was held without a shot attempt while the Seawolves took 14 shots, with four of those being credited on target.
 
When play resumed for the second half, a shot attempt by Stony Brook's Alyssa Francese ricocheted off the post in the 47th minute, negating a scoring chance. Six minutes later, the Seawolves' offense continued to apply pressure but Wagner's defense was up to the task as Julie Johnstonbaugh's shot in the 53rd minute went high over the goal and Allyson Baner's attempt in the 56th minute was blocked by the Green & White' defenders.
 
Wagner got its first shot attempt of the contest as sophomore Mya Donnelly was able to create a scoring chance, delivering a shot was stopped by Stony Brook's Sofia Manner. The Seawolves were able to take advantage and go ahead 2-0 on an own goal in the 58th minute.
 
The home team added its third score of the contest in the 71st minute as Tatum Kauka, after receiving a feed from Kaitlin Loughren in the middle off the field, was able to spin her way free from a Wagner defender and rocket home a shot which made it a 3-0 game.
 
The visitors had a chance to get on the board in the 72nd minute when sophomore Le'la Allen's header was directed on goal but Manner was able to make the save, keeping Wagner off the board.
 
The Seawolves then rounded out the day's scoring in the 83rd minute as Skyler Mackey was able direct the ball off her person to the far post, off a corner kick from Mari Brenden.
 
Allen and team captain, Maria Nunez, were credited with shots for the Seahawks while senior goalkeeper, Katie Viscardi, made four saves on 24 shots faced.
 
Wagner will be back in action on Thursday, September 13, as the Seahawks conclude their mini two-game road trip at Hartford with kickoff set for 5:00 p.m. in West Hartford, CT.
