Wake Forest men beat Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Wake Forest’s Andy Lubahn scored the only goal of the match in the 64th minute to lift 14th-ranked Wake Forest to a 1-0 win at defending national champion and No. 2 Virginia on Saturday night in front of 3,921 fans at Klöckner Stadium.
Wake Forest improves its record to 2-2-1 and 2-0-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while UVa falls to 3-1-1 and 0-1-1 in conference play. The loss snaps Virginia’s 20-match unbeaten streak and its 13-match home unbeaten streak.
Both teams had quality chances to score, but Lubahn tallied the only goal in the 64th minute as he scored off an assist from Luciano Delbono. The goal for Lubahn was his second of the season, while Delbono recorded his first assist of the year.
Akira Fitzgerald recorded his first shutout of the season to earn the win in goal. Fitzgerald made seven saves en route to earning the clean sheet.
Diego Restrepo suffered the loss for Virginia, allowing the one goal and making five saves.
Brian Ownby led the Cavaliers offensively with four shots. Will Bates, Sean Murnane and Ahkeel Rodney each attempted two shots in the game. Both shots from Bates and Rodney were on goal.
Virginia held a 14-10 advantage in shots in the match and a 7-6 edge in shots on frame. The Cavaliers had four corner kicks, compared to two for the Demon Deacons.
The Cavaliers had the first chance of the match in the second minute as a header shot from Bates was saved by Fitzgerald.
Wake Forest answered back and had an attempt on frame in the 13th minute. A header by Kyle Emerson was saved by Restrepo to keep the game scoreless.
The Deacs had another shot on goal late in the first half as an attempt from Danny Wenzel was saved by Restrepo to make the game 0-0 entering the half.
Virginia had a scoring opportunity in the 58th minute as Brian Span had a shot that was saved by Fitzgerald. Wake Forest had a shot on frame 22 seconds later as Emerson had his second shot of the night that was stopped by Restrepo.
Wake Forest broke the scoring deadlock in the 64th minute on Lubahn’s second goal of the season. Delbono played a cross from the left that found Lubahn inside the 18-yard box. Lubahn finished into the upper right corner of the net to put the Deacs in front.
Virginia nearly equalized in the 66th minute. Bates had a shot that Fitzgerald was able to save and send out of bounds for a Cavalier corner kick.
The Cavaliers pressed forward looking for the equalizer in the final 10 minutes. Virginia had four shots on frame in the last 10 minutes, but Fitzgerald was able to thwart each attempt to keep the Deacs in front.
Wake Forest had a chance to add a goal late as Chris Duvall had a pair of shots on goal in the last minute and a half, but both attempts were saved.
Virginia had one final shot attempt near the end of regulation but Murnane’s header went high of the goal to preserve the Demon Deacon win.
Wake Forest returns to action on Tuesday, when the Deacs host College of Charleston at Spry Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
