Wake Forest men fall to College of Charleston

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – College of Charleston’s Francis Twohig scored in the 61st minute to lead the Cougars to a 1-0 win over No. 19 Wake Forest on Tuesday night at Spry Stadium.

Wake Forest is now 2-3-1 on the season, while College of Charleston extends its winning streak to four and improves to 4-2-1.

Twohig got the only goal of the match in the 61st minute. Sean De Silva played a through ball to Twohig. Twohig found himself 1-on-1 with Wake Forest goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald. Twohig’s shot from 16 yards out was tucked inside the right post to put the Cougars in front 1-0.

Wake Forest had a great chance to equalize in the 73rd minute. Kyle Adams played a long pass over the top of the defense to Andy Lubahn in the attacking third. Lubahn ran under the ball, looking to take a shot. He was able to get a touch on the ball, but a College of Charleston defender was able to block the shot to keep the score at 1-0.

Twohig went looking for his second goal of the game in the 80th minute, but his attempt from the right side of the 18-yard box went right to Fitzgerald for the save.

Lubahn had another shot attempt in the final seconds of the match. He dribbled the ball to the center of the field and attempted a left-footed shot from 20 yards out, but his attempt sailed high of the goal as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

Twohig’s goal was his team-leading fifth of the season, while De Silva recorded his team-best third assist of the year.

Luca Gimenez, Andy Lubahn and Jared Watts led Wake Forest with two shots each. Gimenez had the only shot on goal in the game.

Kees Heemskerk earned his fourth win of the season in goal, making one save to earn his third shutout of the season. Fitzgerald took the loss, making two saves and allowing a goal.

College of Charleston held a 9-7 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in shots on frame. The Deacs had five corner kicks, while the Cougars attempted two corners.

The Cougars had the first quality chance of the match in the 24th minute as Ralph Lundy’s attempt from the left side of the penalty area went wide of the right post.

Gimenez looked to put the Demon Deacons in front in the 26th minute. He attempted to curl a shot inside the right post, but his shot went wide right of the goal.

Joey De Mare had a shot on frame for College of Charleston in the 39th minute, but his attempt from 18 yards out went right to Fitzgerald for the save.

Wake Forest is back on the road on Saturday, traveling to UNC Greensboro. Kickoff against the Spartans is set for 7 p.m. (ET).
