October 2, 2009
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 9 Wake Forest and Duke combined for 35 shots, but neither team could find the back of the net as the Demon Deacons and Blue Devils played to a scoreless tie on Thursday night at Spry Stadium.

Wake Forest moves to 8-2-1 on the season and 0-1-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Duke is now 4-4-3 on the season and 0-1-1 in league play.

Each team had their share of the play for portions of the game, but neither team was able to dent the scoreboard. Duke attempted 18 shots in the contest, while Wake Forest had 17 shots recorded.

Making her first start of the season, junior goalkeeper Amanda Barasha earned a shutout for the Deacs, tying a career high with six saves. Tara Campbell had four stops in goal for Duke to record her third clean sheet of 2009.

Senior forward Jill Hutchinson attempted a team-leading six shots for Wake Forest, while fellow senior Kaley Fountain had five shot attempts.

Gretchen Miller and Elisabeth Redmond each had four shots to lead the Blue Devils offensively.

Duke was able to get the first looks at goal in the game as the Blue Devils had three attempts on frame in the opening 19 minutes, but Barasha was able to make the save each time.

Wake Forest didn’t attempt its first shot of the match until the 27th minute, a shot from 22 yards out by Fountain that was saved by Campbell.

The Demon Deacons had another good luck at goal in the 34th minute when Hutchinson fired a shot from 18 yards out at the top of the box that went wide right.

Wake Forest had one final shot attempt with five seconds remaining in the opening 45 minutes, but Fountain’s attempt from distance was sent right to Campbell to keep the game scoreless entering halftime.

The Demon Deacons applied their best pressure of the entire match in the opening minutes of the second half. In the 47th minute, Fountain beat her defender on the left side and played a beautiful cross into the box. However, no one was able to get a touch on the ball as it went all the way through the six-yard box to keep the score at 0-0.

Wake Forest continued the pressure as Hutchinson had a golden scoring chance in the 48th minute. Hutchinson had a look from the left side of the six-yard box, but Campbell was able to make a diving stop to keep the contest scoreless.

Duke had what appeared to be a good scoring chance in the 64th minute. A Wake Forest foul gave Duke a free kick 23 yards out in the center of the field. Redmond took the free kick, but her shot went right into the Demon Deacon wall and was cleared away.

Wake Forest controlled the closing minutes of the second half, taking seven of the final eight shots of regulation. However, Bianca D’Agostino had the only shot that was on goal and Campbell was able to make the save to send the game into overtime.

Neither team was able to get a quality chance in either of the two overtime periods as the teams settled for a scoreless draw and a point each in the ACC standings.

Wake Forest continues conference play on Sunday, traveling to Clemson. Kickoff at Riggs Field is slated for 2 p.m.
