MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men’s soccer team couldn’t find an answer to Francois Basty’s 74th-minute goal Wednesday, suffering a 1-0 loss to in-state rival Green Bay at Aldo Santaga Stadium.

The Badgers (3-6-2) fired five shots on goal, but Green Bay goalkeeper Ryan Wehking stopped each of them to keep UW from a second-consecutive win.

The Phoenix connected on just one of their six shots-on-goal, but the point-blank chance Basty had off a rebound proved to be the difference as Green Bay (10-1-2) picked up its 10th win of the season. Batsy’s second-chance shot came as the last of a barrage fired by the Phoenix in close range to the UW goal.

UW goalkeeper Alex Horwath finished the match with five saves, while Bryan Gerster came off the bench to lead the Badgers’ offensive attack with a team-high four shots.

Four players logged multiple shots for the Badgers, who were out-shot by the Phoenix, 22-15. Green Bay’s J.C. Banks, the nation’s second-leading goal scorer, finished with six total shots and Tony Walls added another five attempts for the Phoenix

The Badgers had a pair of opportunities late in the first half off free kicks deep in Green Bay territory, but the Phoenix had the majority of the offensive chances in the first period. Green Bay launched 12 shots in the first half and had seven corner kicks.

Wisconsin was held without a corner kick in the match.

Senior forward Scott Lorenz was one of three other UW players to tally multiple shots, recording three. Midfielder Jon Rzepka and defender Aaron Nichols, who returned to action after missing Sunday’s match against Michigan State, had a pair of shots each.

Green Bay’s victory, the Phoenix’s first over Wisconsin since 2006, evens the all-time series between the clubs at 16-16-1.

The Badgers now turn their attention back to Big Ten Conference play and an important weekend clash with No. 16 Northwestern. The match, which begins the second half of UW’s Big Ten slate, is set to kick off at 7 p.m. at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill.
