With Record Crowd, LSU Soccer Takes Down Oregon at New Stadium

September 10, 2011

Boudreau chested down a deflected ball in the midfield, turned and drove a left-footed blast into the upper right corner of the net from 30 yards for her team-leading second goal of the season at the 81:20 mark.

Boudreau’s effort ignited a roar like never before from the 2,542 supporters turning out at the LSU Soccer Stadium for team’s 2011 home opener. The celebration continued postgame as players, coaches and fans were treated to a 15-minute fireworks display in honor of LSU’s thrilling victory and the grand opening at what is surely one of the premier venues in women’s college soccer today.

“I saw their keeper was aggressive in the scouting report, so when I saw her come off her line I thought I’d have a go,” Boudreau said. “I got a clean strike on the ball and it worked out for me.”

It was the first goal allowed by the Oregon (4-1-1) defense in six matches this season as the Ducks kicked off with an unbeaten 4-0-1 on the season while outscoring their opponents by an 8-0 margin on the year. The Tigers (3-3) won their second-straight match while evening the all-time series with Oregon at 1-1.

“The atmosphere of the new stadium with a huge crowd was incredible. We wanted the win to really back it up,” said LSU head coach Brian Lee following the game. “I thought we had the better of it in the run of play, but you need to take your chances in a game like this. Taryne did a great job of that on the goal.”

Senior goalkeeper Mo Isom only needed to save one of five shots that she faced on the night to record her second shutout of the season and 24th clean sheet of her storied collegiate career. That moves her into sole possession of the No. 9 position on the SEC’s all-time career list for shutouts by a goalkeeper.

“We played with such passion and heart. Our defense was absolutely on fire,” Isom said. “I didn’t have to do much to keep the clean sheet. This was an amazing night and a big win for our team.”

The Tigers will have little time to rest as they face perhaps their toughest challenge of the year on Sunday as they return to the LSU Soccer Stadium to face the No. 13-ranked Pepperdine Waves with kickoff set to go at 1:07 p.m. CDT. Sunday’s match is the first of two matches to be shown on television this year as the contest will air on Cox Sports Television. LSU will go on the road later this season to face Florida on Oct. 23 in a nationally-televised match on ESPNU.

Pepperdine enters Sunday’s match with an unbeaten 6-0-1 mark on the season, which includes a dominant 4-2 win over No. 20-ranked Illinois on Friday afternoon in the first match of the 2011 LSU Invitational.
