Women's Soccer Completes Comeback to Knock Off Warriors
Millersville, Pa. – East Stroudsburg scored early, but the Marauders score two unanswered goals to complete the comeback and defeat the Warriors on Saturday at Biemsderfer Stadium by a score of 2-1.
In the 16th minute, East Stroudsburg (3-2-1, 1-2-1 PSAC) got on the board after receiving the first corner attempt of the match. Megan Keiser ripped one from the stick that found the head of Courtney Keller. Keller headed it by Millersville’s sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Matyasich, who was making her first start in a Millersville uniform.
The Marauders (3-2, 1-2 PSAC) outshot the Warriors in the first side despite being down early.
Freshman Kelsey Mattola evened the score in the 36th minute when she broke away from two East Stroudsburg defenders. Sophomore Kiersten McLennan fed a through-pass to Mattola to escape the defense. Mattola ripped it past the goalkeeper to knot the game at 1-1 heading into the break.
The Warriors picked up their attack in the second half, outshooting the Marauders (8-5) and getting several corner attempts to put the pressure on.
In the 55th minute, McLennan recorded her third point of the afternoon when she scored to give Millersville a 2-1 lead. Gina Grier dribbled the ball up the right side and sent in a cross, from right to left, which found McLennan for the one-touch shot.
The Marauders held on to the lead to complete the comeback for their third win of the season. Matyasich shined in goal for Millersville in her first start, making five saves.
Millersville hosts Shippensburg on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. The Marauder Sports Broadcasting Network (MSBN) will provide full coverage for fans to listen or watch live.
