NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For a majority of the 110 minutes of soccer on Saturday, Yale was in control. The Bulldogs scored early on Penn and were doing a very good job of playing with the lead. One moment, though, was all the Quakers needed to get the equalizer and escape Reese Stadium with a point. Jake Kohlbrenner’s goal with 6:20 left in the second half tied the score at 1-1 and that was the way the game ended.

Yale (6-4-3, 1-1-2 Ivy) outshot Penn 17-8 and had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

“I thought we had a solid performance and the better of the overall play and chances tonight, but like most Ivy League games, they come down to the wire, and we needed to do a better job of closing this one out,” said Kylie Stannard, The 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs jumped in front at 25:11 with a very pretty goal. Logan Sullivan raced up the near sideline and sent a perfect cross that Kyle Kenagy finished.

Yale had a 10-3 edge in shots after 45 minutes but still had only the 1-0 lead. It was more of the same for the first 30 minutes of the second half. The Bulldogs were controlling possession and limiting Penn’s opportunities.

Penn’s moment came in the 84^th minute after Yale was whistled for a foul. Brandon Bartel sent a long free kick into the box. Kohlbrenner managed to gain control after a scramble in front and fired a hard shot into the back of the net.

“We knew Penn was dangerous on restarts, and while I think our goalkeeper got fouled on the play, we needed to be collectively better to get the clearance and do what’s necessary to get the shutout and win in the closing minutes,” Stannard said.

The Bulldogs had four of the five shots in the two 10-minute overtime periods but couldn’t convert.

“I thought we responded really well after [Penn’s goal] and were absolutely fantastic in overtime and really unfortunate not to find a winner,” Stannard said. “Four years ago, we were happy to get a draw against Penn, and it was our first point in the conference that year. This year we are very disappointed with the result, and it shows how we are growing, and we expect to win this game. That’s a positive sign.”

Overtime was nothing new for the Quakers (2-4-5, 0-3-1 Ivy). Eight of Penn’s 11 games have gone to extra time this year.

Yale returns to action next Saturday, hosting Columbia at Reese Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.

“The conference is still up for grabs, and we will stay positive and do whatever we can to control what we can control over the last three games,” Stannard said.
