Northwestern women fall to BYU

September 18, 2009
EVANSTON, Ill. – Alicia Herczeg (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura Hills) scored her team-leading third
goal of the season but it wasn’t enough for Northwestern women’s soccer as the ’Cats fell to #18
BYU, 2-1, Thursday night at Lakeside Field.

Herczeg’s goal came in the 86th minute with Northwestern (3-4-1) trailing, 2-0. The senior fired a
shot from near the end line that BYU goalkeeper McKinzie Olson stepped off the line to defend.
Olson deflected the ball with her arm but wasn’t able to get enough of it to stop Herczeg’s shot
from going in the net.

BYU (5-2-1) got a pair of goals from Carlee Payne, with the first coming in the 36th minute. After
dancing around a defender, the freshman bent a shot past diving Northwestern goalkeeper Carolyn
Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) and into the lower right corner of the net.

Payne added a second goal off a BYU corner kick just after halftime. The corner produced a scramble
in front of the Northwestern goal and Andrea Willis was able to get the ball to Payne for the score.

The ’Cats outshot BYU in the match by an 11-9 margin. Edwards made one save in the loss, which
snapped a three-match winning streak for Northwestern.

NU is back in action 12 p.m. Sunday when the ’Cats visit #14 Notre Dame. Northwestern returns to
Lakeside Field on Fri., Sept. 25 to open Big Ten play against Indiana. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
