UNC Wilmington women down Francis Marion

FLORENCE, SC - Freshman forward Stephanie Rose scored a pair of goals, one in each half, to lead UNC Wilmington to a 4-0 win over Francis Marion University, Friday afternoon (Sept. 18) in non-conference women’s soccer action.
The Patriots drop to 1-7-0 and will face Appalachian State University on Sunday at 2 p.m. That match has been deemed the Sea of Red Day and all fans are encouraged to wear red.
UNCW (4-3-0) got on the board in the sixth minute when Jenna Evans collected a failed clearance and lofted a 15-yard shot over the outstretched arm of FMU sophomore goalkeeper Casey Durham.
Rose took an outlet pass from Meagan Simeone and after a long run scored on a 19-yard shot at the 7:06 mark. The advantage grew to 3-0 when freshman Amanda Holmes used an assist from Brittany Croce and scored on a 22-yard shot from the near right side in the 24th minute.
Rose accounted for the final score, her team-leading fourth goal of the season, on a 10-yard shot in the 60th minute.
UNCW outshot the Patriots 17-2 and earned all seven of the match’s corner kicks.
Durham recorded five saves, while Seahawk sophomore keeper Chandler Follett did not have to make a save while posting her fourth shutout of the young season.
Senior Jennifer Dyer (18th minute) and junior Kayla Denmyer (40th minute) accounted for the two Francis Marion shots.
UNCW will travel to East Carolina University on Sunday for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
