UMass men defeat Northeastern
September 20, 2009
BOSTON - Ben Arikian tallied the game-winning goal in the 84th minute as the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team netted a 1-0 win over Northeastern on Saturday night. Chris Piekos stood tall in goal making four saves including two in the final two minutes of play.
The Minutemen (1-1-3) will face the Winstars Academy in exhibition action tomorrow afternoon at Rudd Field (1 PM).
For Arikian, the goal was his fifth-career game-winner and the seventh goal of his career. The preseason All-American now has three points for the season and 28 points for his career.
Sophomore David Key set-up the scoring play with a long cross to fellow sophomore Chris Roswess who drove the ball into the 18-yard box. A Northeastern defenseman poked the ball away from Roswess redirecting it towards Arikian who one-timed a shot into the side of the net at the 83:51 mark.
Northeastern (1-4-0) turned up the pressure with a pair of shots on goal in the final two minutes of play, however, Piekos was able to make saves on both to preserve the lead. The shutout was the second this season for Piekos who drops his goals against average to 0.29 and raises his save percentage to .947 in three games.
Michael Gallagher took the loss in goal for Northeastern making a pair of saves.
The Huskies outshot UMass 13-to-8 for the game, however, shots in the second half were a close 6-to-5 in favor of Northeastern.
